The chip that never needed to change

By CrispHemsworth · Chip Correspondent from Australia · 20 Sept 2026

Smith’s Original isn’t the loudest chip on the shelf, and that might be exactly why it has lasted. From beach days and school lunches to sandwiches, chip butties and bowls on the family table, this is a look at the simple, salty classic we didn’t just eat, but ate life around.

There are chips you buy because you want to try something new, and then there are chips you buy because they have always been there. Smith’s Original falls firmly into the second camp for me, and I mean that as the highest compliment. It is not trying to be interesting, because somehow it never needed to be.

Think about the chip aisle now and there is almost too much happening. Flame-grilled this, triple-cheese that, limited editions, collaborations and flavours seemingly designed by someone who has been told plain salt is no longer enough. Then there is Smith’s Original, sitting there quietly with potato, crunch and just the right amount of salt.

And yes, it still goes in my trolley. Not ironically, not because I am doing research in my highly prestigious role as a chip correspondent, and not because nostalgia has completely taken over my purchasing decisions. I buy it because it is still a bloody good chip.

For me, the thing Smith’s Original gets right is the balance. You get that proper crunch, followed by enough salt to make you immediately reach for another one, without feeling like your mouth has been assaulted by seasoning. There is nowhere for an Original chip to hide either, because when you take away the fancy flavours, the actual chip has to do the work.

But I think the reason this particular chip has lasted goes beyond what happens when you open the packet. Smith’s Original was never just something we ate on its own, it became a staple we ate around. Somewhere along the way, it became less of a snack and more like something that simply belonged with Australian food.

Put a bowl of them on the table and nobody needed an explanation. They sat alongside sandwiches, party food, barbecue lunches and whatever else had been pulled out of the fridge, quietly disappearing one handful at a time. You did not announce the Original chips had arrived, you just noticed later that someone had finished them.

Then there was the sandwich. A perfectly respectable sandwich could be sitting in front of you, soft and structurally sound, and suddenly a handful of Smith’s Original could completely change its trajectory. That crunch through soft bread is still one of those simple food pleasures that does not need improving.

And if you wanted to stop pretending the chip was merely an addition, there was the chip butty. Bread, butter and a generous pile of salty, crunchy chips pressed together until you could hear a few of them crack under the top slice. Nutritionally questionable perhaps, but spiritually magnificent.

That is what I mean when I call Smith’s Original a staple. We did not necessarily build an occasion around the chip, we brought the chip into the occasions we were already having. It belonged beside things rather than competing with them, which might actually be part of the reason it became so familiar.

My strongest memories of it are beach days. There was a mental checklist before leaving the house: towels, sunscreen, drinks, something to eat and a packet of Smith’s Original. The chips somehow belonged in the same category as sunscreen, because turning up at the beach without them felt like somebody had forgotten an essential.

I can almost picture the packet being pulled out after everyone had been in the water. Sandy hands were probably involved, nobody was particularly worried about portion control, and the bag would get passed around until the contents had been reduced to those little broken pieces at the bottom. There was nothing sophisticated about it, and that is precisely why the memory sticks.

The same chip could turn up somewhere completely different and still make sense. School lunches, grandparents’ houses, the pub, footy, road trips and family get-togethers all had room for Smith’s Original. It is strange when you think about how many different versions of your life can have the same packet sitting somewhere in the background.

Maybe that is why nostalgia around food can be so powerful. We remember the flavour, obviously, but we are also remembering where we were when we ate it and who was reaching into the same bowl. Sometimes you are not craving a new flavour at all, you are craving something familiar enough to take you somewhere.

Smith’s Original has that advantage because it never overwhelmed the moment. The flavour did not become the story, so the people, places and food around it were allowed to be. It was simply the crunchy, salty constant sitting somewhere within the scene.

There is something almost refreshing about that now. Food products seem to be under constant pressure to reinvent themselves, become louder or give us another reason to notice them. Smith’s Original makes a pretty convincing argument that sometimes being dependable is enough.

Of course, nostalgia alone cannot keep a packet in my trolley. Plenty of things I loved growing up can stay safely in the memory bank without coming home from the supermarket with me. Smith’s Original survives the nostalgia test because underneath all those memories is still the crunch and salt level that made it work in the first place.

That first handful still does exactly what I want it to do. It is uncomplicated, properly crunchy and salty enough that the second handful tends to arrive without much conscious decision-making. The product does not need me to understand it before I enjoy it.

I think that is the real charm of the Original. We have spent years inventing increasingly elaborate ways to flavour a potato chip, yet one of the most satisfying options remains potato, salt and crunch. Sometimes simplicity is not the absence of an idea, it is the confidence to leave a good one alone.

So yes, I will happily investigate whatever strange new flavour gets thrown in front of the chip club next. That is part of the fun of loving chips, and there will always be room in the bowl for something ridiculous. But there should probably be another bowl beside it filled with Smith’s Original.

Because some chips are an experience, while others become part of your experiences. Smith’s Original was there in sandwiches, chip butties, school lunches, road trips, family tables and those beach days when forgetting the chips felt almost as careless as forgetting the sunscreen. And after all these years, it still earns its place in the trolley.

Smith's original: A time capsule in a chip - I think the food scientist wizards got the blend right too... You can never have just a few.
