The Chip Nation guidelines
For the love of chips—and a good argument about which ones are best.
What counts as a chip?
If you’d find it in the chip aisle, we count it. Potato chips, corn chips, twists, puffs and their crunchy neighbours are all welcome. Got one that sits on the edge? Submit it and we’ll take a look.
How to rate a chip
Give each chip four scores from 1 to 5, in half-point steps. Your overall rating is the average of the four.
- Taste: How good is the flavour? Think seasoning, balance and whether it delivers what the packet promises.
- Texture: Is the crunch satisfying? Consider consistency and mouthfeel.
- Appeal: First impressions, presentation and the big questions: would you buy it again or recommend it to a friend?
- Longevity: Does it keep you reaching into the bag, or have you had enough after a few handfuls?
Signed-in citizens may add an optional written review. Guest ratings do not include written reviews.
Who’s rating?
Nation’s Verdict includes guest ratings: it averages every eligible guest rating and every registered user’s rating. Citizens’ Verdict counts registered users only; guest ratings are never included in that average. A citizen’s rating counts once in both averages. An invited Chipfluencer is still a registered citizen, so their rating also counts once in both verdicts rather than as an extra vote. Every average is out of 5 and carries its own rating count. Fewer than 10 ratings is labelled Early Score; no ratings means no average is shown.
Guests must be 16 or older, may post up to 10 ratings per browser in a rolling hour and may rate a chip once. This relies on a private browser identifier, so clearing browser data can reset it; creating an account later does not automatically attach an earlier guest rating.
The People’s Chip is awarded at a Nation’s Verdict of at least 4.6/5; The People’s Pass at 1.8/5 or below. Either requires ratings from at least 10 distinct signed-in citizens. Guest ratings influence the Nation’s average but cannot unlock an award by themselves.
Chip Correspondents help keep chip details up to date and can submit features for approval.
Keep it crunchy, keep it kind
Rate chips you’ve actually tried. Be honest, give useful detail when you can, and disagree about the chips rather than the people eating them. Keep reviews free of personal attacks, spam and undisclosed promotion.
Adding and checking chips
Can’t find a chip? Submit it for review. Please use the name and packet details as accurately as you can; submissions are checked before they appear on the site.
Ingredients, allergens and dietary claims can change. Chip Nation’s details are a helpful starting point, but always check the current packet when that information matters to you.
